"They can change the story, but they can't change the facts". (TM)
This website is about nature, philosophy, meaning of live, simple living, joy, woodworking and how not to be a victim of bad bosses, corrupt government and a world gone mad.
The Wal-Mart Man/Woman
Most people today prefer a Wal-Mart Man/Woman. He/she is easily and locally found; abundant in quantity, and lacking in quality. They are available at nominal cost and like Wal-Mart's short-lived, disposable, veneer-paper furniture, these people bring little long-term value. Over time they are discarded, forgotten and replaced.
Disappointed men and women placate themselves by rationalizing their tolerance of such poor quality (in people as well as furniture). It is the rare person who appreciates the pleasures of finely crafted self-made men/women. Like furniture made of oak, without nails and glue but with fine joinery- oak pegs and dove-tailed joints, they exist and they endure. Like the mighty oaks, they stand strong in all weather. They may move to the rhythm of the planet, like the branches and leaves of walnut trees- but they never bend. There is no thin veneer that will scratch and peel revealing flake board, or some plastic knob to pop loose. Fine people and furniture are not cheap. They take a long time to be made and often hours to maintain. They best be placed among other fine pieces of art in your life, that become more valuable over time.
This is how I feel when I spend months making a rocking chair or years developing a friendship.
