This blog is about nature,
meaning of live,
how not to be a victim of bad people, corrupt government,
and a world gone mad.
Dr. JB Goss lectures widely in Europe, Canada and in the United States.
His topics are:
-meaning of life
-communicating with difficult people
-sadness and depression.
Why you need to read this blog and how to get what you need.
We work 8 hours a day, sleep 8 hours a day, cook-clean-tend to family and home in the remaining 8 hours.
People in general spend most of the money they make on food, mortgages, cars and taxes. In fact, in NYS it takes 4 months of your paycheck just for your annual taxes, and if you live around here your taxes get you crappy roads and an overworked police force. On the Federal level, government has spent my retirement savings, that I was forced to invest in social security, on two Middle East wars that we didn’t win and killed a family member serving in our military (I think my aunt would prefer to have her son back and return the gold star). This predatory tax rate and government intrusion is unheard of in modern times and unsustainable, so why be part of the big city marketer’s ploy to make us buy things we don’t need?
What I need.
I need my kids to live nearby.
I need a good, tasty warm meal.
I need to spend time in the woods.
I need good clean air and water.
I need some time to dream during the day.
I need to share my thoughts and I need some companionship.
I need to do meaningful things with my life.
All of these are of minimal cost and are more valuable to my health than my medical benefits (that cost me $15,000/year before taxes).
For most of us after the expense of food, home, medical benefits and transportation, whatever money is left over goes to our retirement and kids’ education, or as is more common, buying more junk that we don’t truly need in hopes of buying joy in our lives. This means the vast majority of us spend most of our time supporting the corporations that make this stuff and the government that taxes and charges us fees for it. In essence we all work for the corrupt government ("the man") and wealthy corporations ("the man") so we can pay for the essentials and a lot of additional junk that brings no joy to our short lives.
The real cost of something is the time it takes to earn the money to buy it. Your money is your time. How much of your time on this earth you will waste is determined by how much money you will waste. Back in the 60's the phrase tune in, turn on and drop out was popular. For me that phrase has always meant knowing what is really going on in the world (not what any news station tells me), getting high on life (not drugs), and it's really all about finding joy (the only currency that matters) by not serving “the man”.
Rural living teaches us that we can barter for many things we need, grow a garden and fix many of our own things that break.
Urban living does not allow for this.
I spent my first 25 years in Manhattan. The last 35 years in progressively smaller towns. This is how, a Fortune 500 executive/scientist (me) came to live at the WoodSpirit’s Lodge (my rural home).
Here are my basic Gossisms. They are my opinion. They are free (and you know what they say about things that are free).
About the blogger
JB Goss is an American neuroscientist, scholar and retired clinical professor who served as chair of an independent, non-partisan research institute based in New York City where his research was limited to human consciousness. He writes and lectures extensively on man’s eternal quest for meaning and is often acclaimed for using entertaining fiction to communicate complex theory. The intent of this blog is for the reader to explore their own personal beliefs with fun scientific and historical information. Dr Goss remains an avid woodworker, arborist and student of life.
What I believe
Who owns you?
The enemy of the working man.
I am not a Trumpster or Hillarion. I am not a Democrat or Republican. I am not a Liberal or Conservative.
I am a scientist who has a personal connection with some higher power; who has spent a lifetime being a father and who has made tough choices.
Like a master carpenter or mechanic can tell you about your car or house, I can tell you that the Earth is dying. That is just the way it is. Science can be rewritten to say whatever people want to hear but the data is unchanged.
In the words of singer Ani DeFranco (and I paraphrase here)
...squint your eyes and look closer…
(the facts are the facts)
...they are beyond your peripheral vision
so you might want to turn your head...
I would listen to my heart surgeon about my heart if I need surgery and listen to the top scientists in the world about science.
As you are reading this, a few hundred people, enough to fill a good size holiday party room, are taking legal ownership of the earth by laws they have passed through purchased US Senators and Representatives. They now have control of the Earth’s real wealth, specifically food (we buy it from them), water (we will be buying all of our water from them in 20 years), air (we buy our drugs for the growing asthma epidemic due partly to pollution) and shelter (in the form of mortgages and taxes). Meanwhile its implied (by them) that all of the world's problems are not the fault of you or them, but the fault of others not like us. So, some whites hate blacks and vice versa. Some US workers hate Chinese workers and vice versa. How easy to forgetthat we all bleed the same blood and have over 99.9999% the same DNA.
We (not those rich and born to privledge) are not non-living corporations or people who have never felt hunger. People when exposed to great wealth in the corporate board room get corrupted.
Bruce Springsteen wrote,
...poor man wants to be rich,
rich man wants to be king,
and a king ain't satisfied till he rules everything...
The corporations ability to destroy others using weapons like the internet and bullying are the new 1950’s “H” bomb that has carried into the new century. CNN and FOX and NPR want you to know that people really care about Bieber Fever and the UFC and Reality TV (which is contrived and not reality at all). If I were in a burning building I would want the fireman to pay attention to the fire and stay on task. In a complex world I would want CNN and FOX and NPR to just provide the raw information rather than telling me what it says as if I could not understand it on my own! I want Walter Cronkite!
Global power is held by corporations that own our government. Government protects corporations and stopped representing you and me long ago. Ten percent of all bills passed by congress over the past 10 years were written for you and me. The remaining 90% were written for the benefit of billionaires. To be a multi-billionaire gives the power to spend one million dollars ($1,000,000) a day and still not ever use all of their money. Think about that. I could live the rest of my life on one million dollars, they spend that much in one day to keep themselves in power. I don’t know about you, but most people could not afford to spend $100 a day and survive very long.
There is no free market anymore so when capitalism is marketed to you on TV and radio please know it has been intentionally corrupted by the same banks that hold your car, school and home loans, and the same folks who provide healthcare and make the medications you live on, and the same folks who lend you money on credit cards at 15% while paying less than 1% in your savings account.
The more we depend on big corporations for survival the more they own us and we become enslaved. Currently, food, shelter, transportation, heating fuel, health insurance, and our sources of information depend on our ability to buy them. Soon water will be the sold and no longer free as the aquifers are already unsafe from pollution and the corporations will charge you for purified water.
Want to eat- pay the man.
Want shelter from the storm-pay the man.
We have forgotten how to tend a garden, to tune a car, to forage, to talk without the internet, to write letters without computers, tablets and smart phones.
We have access to all of the information in the world on our smart phones but we have no wisdom on how to properly use it.
Wisdom, by Gossism definition, is actually just acquired knowledge, forged through experience and adversity into wisdom. You can have knowledge on how to do geometry but wisdom means using it to build a house. Wisdom is not the opinion of a charismatic radio or TV personality who agrees with your politics and then blends out truth with fascist sensationalism. It’s not the Chinese or the Muslims or the Tea Party or the working class white man…it’s the corporations. Period.
Wisdom dictates that you should take care of your elders and your children rather than pay an old age home and day care as if that is morally ok. I mean really, is that what family does? Knowledge says I can place them in a home or daycare. Advertising says adult homes are just wonderful and you should buy their services and you should work extra hours so you can pay for it (when you could have been home taking care of them yourself with those hours used at work).
Our reliance on services and things that we must buy is enslavement. We have no power or say over the demi-god billionaires who have never known hunger or a freezing home or waiting a month to see a physician when sick or not filling a prescription because they can’t afford it.
The billionaires purchase laws to meet their own needs via spending millions on elections so only the very wealthy (not Washington, Lincoln, or Jefferson) can serve the masses. They treat laws like advertising. The new Washington, Lincoln, or Jefferson are silenced under the noise of radio, TV and internet because all of these sources of information are owned by the same billionaires...
who seek to enslave you,
with an ever growing complex world,
of new things,
we must buy and,
are newly created just for you,
folks with no wisdom,
and no time to think about it
because you are working for the man,
to buy these new things and services,
he has ready to sell you,
that you can’t live without.
What will you do?
